IBS and Diet

Irritable Bowel Syndrome is a disease that has no clear known cause. There have been many theories about its etiology but none of them just seem to hit the right spot.

Most often than not, treatments are given to control, relieve or suppress the symptoms of Irritable Bowel Syndrome. But there is one treatment that is common for all patients of irritable bowel syndrome and that is the Patient’s Diet.

Dietary Tips for Irritable Bowel Syndrome Patients -

Soluble Fiber: Make it a habit to eat soluble fiber first before eating anything else. It would also be very helpful to make soluble fiber as having the biggest component of your meal.

Say No To Fat: If you can’t help yourself but eat fatty foods, always remember to keep it at a minimum. Allocate at most 25% of fatty food. And if you do eat fat in your meal, always remember to eat soluble fiber foods first. Never ever eat fatty foods on an empty stomach.

Eliminate: There are certain foods you are better off without. These are Dairy, Red Meat, Egg Yolks, Fried Foods, Alcohol and Soda.

Insoluble Fiber: Just like fatty foods, do not eat insoluble fiber on an empty stomach. Always start off with the soluble fiber foods. You also need to prepare the insoluble fiber foods properly by cooking, pureeing, or chopping them.

Small Portions: There are times when you feel really hungry and you would just like to gobble everything up. Try to stay away from this. No matter how hungry you are, you need to eat slowly, leisurely and calmly. It is better to eat 5 times a day in small portions rather than three big meals a day. The purpose of this is to reduce the strain, your stomach may experience if you eat a lot of food at a go.

The Right Attitude: Do not think that you are punishing yourself for having the kind of diet that you have. You always need to see the positive side of things. Soon you will enjoy the new set of food you are eating.

Spices: Spices are used to add taste to your food up. But despite its very tempting function, it would be better to minimize the use of spices in preparing your food. Too much of these can cause a flare up in your symptoms. Spices can put a toll not only on your digestive tract but also on your kidneys.

Remember
When you are restricted to eat something, it does not necessarily mean you have to deprive yourself of that something. But this also does not mean that you are allowed to eat it. Do not forget that you always have the power of substitution. You will still be able to reap the benefits of the restricted foods without having to suffer from the symptoms of your illness.
