Benefits of Butter Milk

In the north, yoghurt is whisked with sugar or salt and roasted cumin seeds to make ‘lassi’ or ‘chaach’, the same drink is tempered lightly with mustard seeds and curry leaves to make ‘mor’ in the south.

Ayurvedic nutrition recommends buttermilk to pacify Pitta Dosha (aggravates during summers).

This traditional thirst-quenching refreshing drink with high therapeutic and nutritional properties is appetizing, cooling, rejuvenating, soothing and serves as an excellent antidote to sunstrokes during Indian peak summer time.

It tones the small intestine, very light on the stomach and easy to digest unlike other dairy products like cheese and paneer.

It goes without saying that 'majjiga' (as in South India) is the healthiest low calorie milk product among the many dairy products and works as a good calcium substitute for the high calorie dairy products.

Buttermilk serves as a good home remedy for removing sun tan. Apply buttermilk to the face and rinse off with cool water, once dry.

Originally, buttermilk was the liquid left behind after churning butter out of cream. It also refers to a range of fermented milk drinks, common in warm climates

Akki says :

Butter milk is one of the best drinks specially in summers. It helps keep your cool...

I found that the butter milk in the northern parts of India is thicker than that in the southern parts of India... Is there a specific reason for this?

Always Fine says :

Originally, the term buttermilk referred to milk that was left over after churning butter from cream. Now, it's often created by adding culture to pasteurized milk. Both methods yield that familiar buttermilk taste. Because buttermilk is low in both fat and calories, many use it as a substitute for regular milk or cream to help lose weight. Buttermilk also regulates bowel movements and the general digestive track, which also helps promote weight loss. You can drink buttermilk plain or add sweetener to it for a less tart taste. You can also substitute buttermilk for cream, half and half or milk products when baking.

chalbal says :

Buttermilk is highly efficient in dipping the amount of heat produced in the body due to many internal and external conditions such as high temperature. Therefore, buttermilk is consumed large quantities during summer season

Sonika says :

Buttermilk is also an excellent deep-cleansing agent. The skin is also nourished if you make a mixture of two teaspoons buttermilk and a few drops of almond oil and rose water. Before bath, apply this mixture over the face and neck. Allow it to stay for half an hour. Then wash it off.
Buttermilk also has a cooling effect on the head. Apply buttermilk for twenty minutes on your hair. Rub your hair well with fingers. Finally rinse your hair with warm water. You can add a few drops of lemon juice and honey for a lustrous and glowing result
Buttermilk is lower in fat than regular milk, since the fat has been removed to make butter. It is also high in potassium, vitamin B12, calcium, and riboflavin as well as a good source of phosphorus. Those with digestive problems are often advised to drink buttermilk rather than milk, as it is more quickly digested. Hence a daily intake of buttermilk is essential to keep the skin and body fit, supple and healthy.

Karsh says :

Ayurveda describes the buttermilk as "Takra". It is the fatless liquid curd. To prepare takra the cream is churned in to butter and the churned buttermilk is called takra. It is the fluid remaining when the fat is removed.

kapil says :

Those with digestive problems are often advised to drink buttermilk rather than milk, as it is more quickly digested. Buttermilk has more lactic acid than skim milk.
