Very Berry Juice-fight cancer with this antioxidant packed juice.

Antioxidants are substances that may protect cells from the damage caused by ‘free radicals’ (unstable molecules). It is widely believed that this free radical damage can lead to cancer.

Antioxidants neutralize free radicals which are the natural by-product of normal cell processes. The best sources for these happen to be fruits, vegetables, whole grains and pulses. No one food or food group should be your sole focus. It's best to include a wide variety of foods as part of a healthy, well-balanced diet.

Berries are among the richest in antioxidants which are measured as ORAC (Oxygen Radical Absorbance Capacity):
  • Blueberries - 2,400 ORAC
  • Blackberries - 2,036 ORAC
  • Strawberries - 1,540 ORAC
  • Raspberries - 1,220 ORAC
Here is the recipe for a mixed berry juice that is rich in antioxidants and can be included along with a balanced meal:

Very Berry Juice (1-2 serving)
Ingredients:
  • Blackberries: 1cup
  • Blueberries: 1 cup
  • Raspberries: 1 cup
  • Black/blue grapes: 1 cup
  • Lime juice: 2tsp
  • Water: 1cup

Method:

  1. Wash all the fruits.
  2. Blend well in a mixie.
  3.  Add the water and a teaspoon of honey (optional). Mix well.
  4. Do not throw the pulp as it will give you the necessary fiber.
  5. Serve chilled with a dash of lime juice.
Raise your glass and toast your way to good health!!!

Nukkad Chai Wala says :

Talking about antioxidants, Tea is a significant source of antioxidants. Very good for heart related ailments and cancer.

The tea leaf contains a number of different chemicals such as tannic acid, caffeine etc. It contains a number of antioxidants such as flavonoids and some other nutrients which are beneficial to the heart. It is also anticarcinogenic. Drinking of tea is beneficial to the heart as the antioxidants present in it stops the oxidation of bad cholesterol (LDL) and increases the amount of good cholesterol (HDL). It also helps to lower the blood pressure. The antioxidants help to fight oxidative stress by destroying the free radicals. It helps to lower the risk of different cancers such as stomach and esophageal. It protects from blood clotting and reduces cholesterol.

Can anyone tell why does the taste of tea change within a couple of hours in a flask even if you use the best quality and clean flasks??

The juices of fruits and vegetables with the highest concentrations of antioxidants offer the best protection against damage caused by free radicals, unstable molecules that naturally occur in your body. The best antioxidant juices contain 100 percent natural fruits or vegetables. Darker colored fruits and vegetables appear to contain more antioxidants.

Mohan Upadhyay says :

Free radicals are formed from a number of causes. Cigarette smoke, pollution, exposure to sunlight all cause the formation of free radicals.

Antioxidants search for these free radicals and lend them an electron. This stabilizes the molecule, thus preventing damage to other cells.

Sandy says :

@Tina: Any other beverages which are really good antioxidants?

Tina Khanna says :

@Sandy- Green Tea, Carrot and Beetroot juice, Pomegranate juice, extracts of Jamun, Amla are also good sources of antioxidants.

Try and incorporate atleast one antioxidant rich power beverage each day to keep you going miles.

Shweta Uchil says :

@Nukkad chai wala- the taste change in tea could be due to the presence of a compounds called polyphenols and tannins. These probably get oxidised over a period of time and can change the taste.

@Sandy-all coloured fruits and veggies have a high content of antioxidants(palak, papaya, pomegrantes, etc) -you can make your own fruit/vegetable mocktails with them.
