Fruits to be Eaten - Before or After Meals!
As a nutritionist, I come across queries that often send me into a dizzy fix. Now, this question popped out at the dinner tabel at my friend's house.
Which is the best time to eat fruits - empty stomach / inbetween meals or after meals as dessert?
Hmmm - honestly; I am not sure as there does'nt seem to be a researched document on this (if anyone comes across one, please share it here).
But, my understanding tells me that fruits should be considered as a healthy meal in itself. It can be best eaten as a fruit bowl replaced by breakfast, lunch or dinner or as a snack in noon or evening replaced by chips / cookies.
Fruits have calories. These have fruit sugars as well. My understanding says that these will add to the calorific value of the meal if taken along with the meal. And being sugars, there are chances of it being digested faster and being assimilated as fat (excess calories get stored as fat).
No wonder; I realised that when my friends on a weight loss diet plan get stuck on a weight start to show results when I suggest them "try to omit fruits for a week and have raw vegetables instead".
Now if you have some interesting insights on this, I would love to hear your opinion as well.
